Meet the Creator
These pictures were taken by my talented niece (love you MM!) on a beautiful winter day at historic Tuckahoe. The big, white pups are residents of the farm and were our constant companions during our visit.
I’m a local gal who has spent her whole life in the mid-Atlantic but have always had a love and respect for the style and spirit of the American West. I am inspired by the beauty of the western landscape, the scents, sounds, and sights of its environment, and the resiliency and elegance of its people. Though I will continue to visit and explore the West, my heart keeps me rooted here on the Eastern Shore, close to my own heritage —family, friends, and the open waters of the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean that feed my soul.
I studied art and design in college, then Native American art and art of the West in graduate school. I spent much of the last 30 years working in history museums using storytelling to help people understand their own place in the grand story of humankind. The dream of The Mercantile in Easton began over five years ago when I was transitioning jobs. I longed to return to where I began, in a creative endeavor, inspired by Western style and attitude that would help women put (or keep) a little sass in their steps — wherever those steps might take them.
I invite you to stop by the shop, swap stories with me, and try on some jeans and boots that will make you feel like the sexy and powerful woman that I know you are!
I’d love to hear from you with comments and suggestions. You can reach me at joan@MercantileEaston.com.
Meet Our Brands
We are always on the lookout for new suppliers who offer unique products that are well-made, easy on the earth, and respectful of people — but most importantly, products that make you feel incredible wearing them. If you would like to suggest brands or companies for us to consider, just send me a note. Here are just a few of the brands you’ll find in the shop.
